A Mexican national living in New Bedford was sentenced to four months in prison for unlawfully reentering the United States after being deported. The sentencing took place in federal court in Boston.

Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, 38, received his sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. After serving his prison term, he will be placed on two years of supervised release and is subject to deportation once his sentence is complete. In June 2025, Lorenzo-Guatemala pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien following his arrest and criminal complaint in May 2025.

Lorenzo-Guatemala had previously been removed from the United States on June 4, 2019. He returned illegally at an unspecified date after that removal. Immigration authorities discovered he was back in the country after he was arrested on July 2, 2024 for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

“United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Valuable assistance was provided by the Lynn Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case.”
