A Guatemalan national, Edilzar Morales-Barillas, has been sentenced to 29 months in prison for unlawful reentry into the United States. The sentencing took place in federal court in Boston, overseen by U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. Following the completion of his sentence, Morales-Barillas will face deportation.

Morales-Barillas, aged 36, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry in January 2025 after being charged on July 31, 2024. He had previously been deported from the United States on May 14, 2021. Despite this removal, he unlawfully returned to the country at an unspecified time.

His presence was discovered by immigration authorities on May 27, 2023, after he was arrested for a fourth offense related to operating under the influence of alcohol.

The announcement of the sentencing was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director in Boston for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan prosecuted the case.
