A former United States Postal Service employee was sentenced on April 2 in federal court in Boston for stealing mail and government funds.

Michael Murray, 38, of Lynn, received a sentence of 30 months’ probation from U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin. He was also ordered to pay $8,553 in restitution and to forfeit $5,130. Murray had pleaded guilty in January to one count of theft of mail matter by an employee and one count of theft of government money after being indicted by a federal grand jury in April last year.

The case highlights concerns about the security of mail entrusted to postal employees and the importance of maintaining public trust in federal services.

According to court records, Murray worked as a postal clerk at the Beach Street Post Office in Revere and the Melrose Post Office from September 2022 through July 2023. Between April and July 2023, he used his position to steal contents from hundreds of pieces of mail—including gift cards, cash, and checks—totaling about $3,422. During this period, he also generated USPS money orders intended for customers but instead negotiated them for his own use totaling approximately $5,131.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley said that she made the announcement along with Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General’s Northeast Area Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin Chao prosecuted the case.
