An El Salvadoran national, Miguel Angel Ortiz-Rivera, 39, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for unlawfully reentering the United States after deportation. Ortiz-Rivera was arrested by immigration authorities on May 24, 2025.

According to the indictment, Ortiz-Rivera was most recently deported from the United States to El Salvador on March 11, 2015. It is alleged that he illegally reentered the United States without permission sometime after his March 2015 removal. Previously, Ortiz-Rivera had been deported to El Salvador in November 2011 and April 2013.

The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. The defendant will also face deportation upon completion of any sentence imposed. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes governing criminal cases.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston announced the charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra W. Amrhein from the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.

The details in the charging documents are allegations at this stage; Ortiz-Rivera is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
