An Ecuadorian national living in Lawrence, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to six months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after deportation. Carlos Guaico-Bano, 35, received his sentence from U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs and will be subject to one year of supervised release following his prison term. He faces deportation upon completion of his sentence.

Guaico-Bano pleaded guilty in June 2025 to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. Authorities arrested him in May 2025.

Records show that between February and March 2020, Border Patrol agents encountered Guaico-Bano four times at various locations in Texas—Brackettville, Eagle Pass, and El Paso—and each time determined he had no legal right to remain in the country. He was returned to Mexico on each occasion.

On March 3, 2020, during one such encounter, Guaico-Bano was served with a Notice to Appear at removal proceedings scheduled for March 10, 2020. Instead of appearing as directed, he attempted another unauthorized entry into the U.S., leading to his immediate custody and removal back to Ecuador that same day.

In September 2020, authorities apprehended Guaico-Bano attempting to enter the United States illegally for a sixth time; he was again removed to Ecuador.

The case came back into focus when immigration officials learned that Guaico-Bano had returned illegally after his arrest on November 17, 2021, in Lawrence on charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was convicted and received an 18-month suspended sentence but was released from state custody before immigration authorities could intervene.

“United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.”
