A Dominican man living in Lawrence has been sentenced in federal court for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Elian Ortiz Baez, 25, received a sentence of time served, approximately four months in prison, and three years of supervised release from U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley. Ortiz Baez is also subject to deportation.

On June 4, 2025, Ortiz Baez admitted guilt to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He had previously been deported on March 15, 2022, but later returned to the U.S. without authorization. Immigration authorities encountered him around February 13, 2025.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston; and Chief Maurice Aguiler of the Lawrence Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus from the Major Crimes Unit handled the prosecution.
