A Colombian man has been sentenced in a Boston federal court for his involvement in an international money laundering organization that funneled over $6 million in drug proceeds from Colombian cartels through the United States, Caribbean, and European banking systems. Jaime Humberto Mejia-Bencardino, 62, received a sentence of 115 months in prison from U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns.
Mejia-Bencardino pleaded guilty on December 11, 2024, to one count of money laundering conspiracy and 16 counts of laundering monetary instruments. Extradited at the request of the United States to face charges, he will be subject to deportation upon completing his sentence.
In May 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Mejia-Bencardino along with 19 others from Colombia, Jamaica, and Florida as part of this money laundering conspiracy. The investigation led to the seizure of $1 million from corporate bank accounts and traced nearly 3,000 kilograms of cocaine valued at over $90 million back to the organization.
The investigation into this sophisticated money laundering network began around October 2016. Operating primarily out of Barranquilla, Colombia, the organization laundered drug proceeds through intermediary banks in multiple regions using the Colombian Black Market Peso Exchange (BMPE). This method aimed to conceal drug trafficking activities and evade currency exchange requirements.
As part of their operations, peso brokers based in Colombia exchanged pesos for drug suppliers’ dollar proceeds collected by couriers in various locations. These funds were then deposited into bank accounts under company or individual names to appear legitimate or dispersed across several accounts before consolidation.
An undercover agent infiltrated the organization between 2016 and 2022 by posing as an international money launderer capable of handling bulk cash transactions worldwide. Mejia-Bencardino personally managed over $1.95 million in laundered drug proceeds during this period.
Mejia-Bencardino is now the eleventh defendant sentenced in connection with this case; all but one remaining defendant have been convicted.
