A Bridgewater resident has admitted guilt in a federal court for his involvement in the armed robbery of a cash courier serving licensed cannabis companies. The incident took place outside a bank in Swansea, Massachusetts, last year. According to authorities, the assailants zip-tied and pepper-sprayed the victim before setting their stolen getaway vehicle on fire.
Steven Madison, aged 39, pleaded guilty to several charges including robbery, conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. A sentencing date is yet to be determined by the court.
In May 2024, Madison was arrested alongside Christopher White and Quentin McDonald for their alleged roles in the heist. Elgun Mikaiylov was later indicted for allegedly providing information about cash pickups at one of the dispensaries where he was formerly employed as a manager.
The events unfolded early on February 19, 2024. Madison and another man reportedly stole a van from U-Haul Moving & Storage in Abington. Later that day, they targeted an armed courier who arrived at a Swansea bank with $436,200 intended for deposit. It is alleged that White confronted the courier while wearing camouflage attire and pointed a gun at him before binding his hands with zip ties. Madison then reportedly loaded the money into their van.
Surveillance footage revealed that despite being restrained inside his vehicle, the courier managed to free one hand and fired shots at the fleeing van before contacting law enforcement.
After departing from the bank location, Madison and White are accused of transferring the stolen cash into an SUV driven by McDonald at another location in Swansea before burning their original vehicle.
During subsequent searches of Madison’s home in Bridgewater, police discovered a pistol along with over 400 grams of cocaine. His criminal history includes convictions for masked armed robbery among other offenses.
Various charges against Madison carry significant potential sentences ranging up to 20 years or more depending on specific violations such as Hobbs Act robbery or drug distribution intent coupled with heavy fines reaching millions if convicted under U.S Sentencing Guidelines applied by federal judges.
