A Brazilian national residing in Somerville has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly reentering the United States illegally after being deported. Paulo Vinicius Cardozo Pereira, 43, faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He was arrested by immigration authorities on May 10, 2025, and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston on June 24, 2025.

According to the indictment, Cardozo Pereira was deported from the United States on July 25, 2014. It is alleged that he returned to the country without permission sometime after his removal in July 2014.

The charge carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, followed by one year of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Upon completion of any sentence imposed, the defendant is subject to deportation. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra W. Amrhein of the Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.

“The details contained in the charging documents are allegations,” it was noted. “The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
