Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has called on AmeriGas and Superior Plus Propane to address delivery issues that left hundreds of state residents without heat or hot water during the winter. In letters sent to both companies, Campbell stated, “Gas companies have an obligation to deliver the services they promise on time and reliably. Leaving households without heat or hot water during the cold winter months after requiring customers to rely on them exclusively for this service is both dangerous and unacceptable,” adding, “AmeriGas and Superior Plus Propane must immediately fix the problems that have left consumers with empty or nearly empty gas tanks this heating season.”

According to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), more than 67 complaints were received from Massachusetts consumers during the heating season. The complaints allege that AmeriGas and Superior Plus failed to deliver propane, resulting in dangerously low or empty tanks for customers. Many consumers reported being bound by exclusive contracts with these companies, which prevented them from seeking alternative providers when deliveries were delayed.

Consumers also described difficulties reaching company representatives, including long wait times and unresolved issues after making contact. The AGO noted that many affected households depend on propane for heating, hot water, and cooking—particularly in rural areas not served by a natural gas grid. These communities often include elderly residents or families with limited financial means, raising concerns about health and safety risks when heat is unavailable for extended periods.

The demand letters instruct AmeriGas and Superior Plus Propane to promptly investigate and resolve operational issues within Massachusetts to prevent further disruption of propane deliveries. The AGO has requested written documentation from both companies detailing their efforts to address these problems.

Residents facing business-related issues are encouraged to file complaints with the AGO. Those needing immediate help due to lack of heat should contact their propane provider as well as the AGO’s consumer hotline at (617) 727-8400.
